Petty Sins Floors God’s Mighty Men

Great has been the fall of mighty men of renown through sins that they deemed little and looked down upon. The Bible is full of several of such mighty men and woman. One particular great man of renown that I want us to consider in this devotion is king David.

Beloved, the great king David while relaxing on the roof of his palace saw a beautiful maiden having a bath. He rationalized that there wouldn't be much harm done to his spiritual life if he had a second look on such a beautiful maiden. The result was a third look, and then an evil passion that led to the abominable sins of adultery and murder (2 Samuel 11:1-27).

King David repented and learnt his lessons but the consequences that followed this petty act of a second look were catastrophic. We should never forget for a moment that whatever kind of sin we are committing now is capable of bringing us down too no matter our standing in the Christian life. It might be just a little watching of pornography, just a little pleasurable moment of masturbation, just a little viewing of secular movies, just a little listening of secular songs, just a little revealing of our private parts in a sensuous clothing, just a little petting and kissing with people we might even intend to marry, and then we also will fall.

Great and terrible might be our fall in the eyes of people. But our fall might have only begun with a "petty sin"; the kind of sin that we have blushed off as normal and hardened our hearts against the promptings and rebukes of the Holy Spirit. We should never forget that just like David, we will also have consequences when we fall. But like king David, we might not have the second chance to repent. The Scripture says; today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts (Hebrews 3:15). May the Lord give us the strength to forsake all known sins and strive to walk in the path of holiness.
